Writing reviews for okayplayer led to some pretty sub-par assignments, but it also gave me a chance to become a huge fan of Novel. Here he reconnects with Joell Ortiz who is everywhere these days, as well as Papoose who used to be everywhere and stepped out of the spotlight for a little while. Not to mention this doesn't sound at all like the Pap I'm used to.
First off, Guns-N-Butter would not be my first choice for a group name. What it boils down to is you can call yourself whatever you want as long as the music is good. Stu Bangas and Guns-N-Butter hooked up with Philly's Reef the Lost Cauze to produce his upcoming Fight Music album. If Reef cosigns you, then you must be doing something right. The "I'm a G" EP featuring this B-Side drops July 7th and the album in the Fall.
Rapper / producer Will C. links up once again with Esoteric on this B-side single from his upcoming debut album "Evil in the Mirror" out July 21st on Brick Records. Fans of 7LES, Edan, and Insight should pay attention to Will C.
Revalation usually hooks us up with exclusives by fellow EMS member M-Dot, but this time he's rightfully taking a moment to push his own music. Tomorrow marks the release of The Push Back Mixtape. It features unreleased tracks, collaborations and older songs, and will serve as a precursor to The Revalation Will Be Televised Mixtape, which as you can probably guess has been pushed back. We'll post up the link as soon as we have it.
As a product of the 80's and someone who enjoyed VH1's ultimate guilty pleasure show, I Love the 80's, I'm a fan of any artist paying tribute to the decade of my youth. CookBook, one of the many members of LA Symphony, takes us back to that era with his own I Love the 80's, using all kinds of samples, references and sounds that'll jog your memory. The song "What's Happening Now" speaks for everybody that can appreciate art as a form of escape.
I'm not sure if B.o.B. is slowly trying to change his name to Bobby Ray or if he wants both personalities to exist separately. The new mixtape B.o.B. vs. Bobby Ray is divided into two halves allowing both personas to shine, and I personally prefer the Bobby Ray half. All I know is B.o.B. is one of the few artists that actually has me anticipating mixtapes. Download the mixtape without drops here: http://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/ohsqhm (Who would want it with drops?)
New Jersey legend Tame-One meets rising Jersey producer The Custodian of Records on this unreleased track. This is the best Tame joint I've heard in a while so he'd be wise to hook up with The Custodian more often. Feel free to check our review of TCOR's Burton Music or his blog at http://thecustodianofrecords.blogspot.com/
It's been a while since I've heard anything new from Sene, which is unfortunate. I was particularly hoping his project with Blu would have seen the light of day by now. At least that's something to look forward to in the future. "The Trade" is produced by EmAy and was described as "an exclusive leak from one of Sene's upcoming projects." That's not very helpful.
I don't know the best and least offensive way to say this, but Yak Ballz has always been somewhat of a "protege" to Cage. As Cage has evolved over the years, Yak has evolved in a similar fashion. The "Agent Orange" and "Homepiss" days are behind both of them. Either way I'm a big Yak fan and can always appreciate an artist's growth. "Gas Galaxy" is the first leak off Def Jux Presents Vol. 4.
We already posted PH's remake of Diamond D's "That's That Shit", so check the archives for that. This time the artist formerly known as Pumpkinhead reworked Souls of Mischief's classic "93 Til Infinity". This is one beat I'll never get sick of. In case you didn't notice the trend, both tracks will be featured on PH's upcoming My Era mixtape which continues the usage of classic instrumentals.
I was supposed to put this song up a month ago but it slipped my mind. Oops. Better late than never because I'm actually a big fan. Texas duo Mojoe is described as part Outkast and part Nappy Roots, with a little classic R&B mixed in. That sounds like a good mixture to me. "Dirty Genes" is the title track off their album. For now you can find out more at http://www.myspace.com/mojoefamily
Representing the grimy streets of Camden, New Jersey are Al Mighty & DistantStarr, also known as MAGr. (Pronounced Major) "Feelin Us" is one of a few B-Sides we came across from their upcoming album No News Is Good News, featuring Blu and Cymarshall Law, with production by Fel Sweetenberg and Hudson Mohawke among others. This joint was produced by The S Ence who is also one half of Hustle Simmons with Dave Ghetto. Check out MAGr at http://www.myspace.com/MCSALWAYSGETRESPECT
The first time I heard Toki Wright he was opening and hosting on tour for his good friend Brother Ali. Toki is the rare artist that can capture a crowd that isn't familiar with him. By the second time he came through I was a fan. Finally he'll be exposed to the masses with his Rhymesayers debut, A Different Mirror. Check out our video of Toki performing "State of Emergency" a year ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ni_uTIvG7H8
The homie Cymarshall Law decided to bless his fans with some unreleased music this morning via Facebook. So like always we are here to share the goods. Big ups to Cy and Pace for giving this track freedom. From the East to the West Jeah!
Here is the first leak from Random Axe project consisting of Guilty Simpson, Sean Price and Black Milk. Shout out to AOR counterpart Kendrid Spirit for schooling a brother on this.
When M.O.P. signed to Roc-A-Fella and later on to G-Unit, people thought it meant big things for Lil Fame and Billy Danze. Big things did not happen. They were coming off arguably their best work in Warriorz and label BS resulted in an unproductive 6-7 years. Finally they're back with The Foundation and hopefully all of that fueled the fire. Here they linked up with Busta Rhymes, one of the few artists that can match their intensity.
J57 returns on Day 6 of Brown Bag Season, this time with a more serious toned joint. The beat is provided by none other than Aftermath producer Mr. Porter who has worked with Brown Bag AllStars in the past. On June 20th they will perform at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival alongside Pharoahe Monch, Styles P, DJ Premier, Grand Puba, Marco Polo & Torae and a host of others.
I was kinda confused by the blurb that came with this Khrysis produced track, so I'll just post it: "From the DMV..the newly formed duo, consisting of DDotOmen.com's Blog Bully; D. Omen and Kendall Elijah repping HyattsvILLe. Kendall formerly aligned with Nando Mcflyy and Lyriciss Flowz (in their DMG powergroup), path eventually crossed with D. Omen and the two are focused on reviving the art of tag team hip-hop. An EP coming this summer along with Kendall Elijah's solo re-emergence to the scene. No titles as of yet but the music gives promise. Khrysis has even stamped this with his approval."
Fel Sweetenberg garnered attention as one half of Nuthouse alongside Dave Ghetto. Both him and Dave are AOR favorites and Fel's debut Lost Dreams Wasted Talent is one of those slept-on joints that should be handed out with late passes. Most recently Sweetenberg flexed his producer muscles on Break Bread Projects with the instrumental LP Sweet's Day Off. Fel will try to avoid the sophmore jinx with his new album....The Sophmore Jinx.
Moka Only's Lowdown Suite 2: The Box is in my opinion one of the brightest beams of hip hop light so far this year and is definitely a personal favorite of mine. Here's one of the best and most melodic joints on the album and while you're listening to it, be sure to check out AOR's glowing review of LS2 HERE. This LP should not be slept on.
